Categories miss a major feature of lists: removal of a page from the category is not detected without having all these pages in advance on one's watchlist. For a list one can look in the page history.
Also categories cannot list non-existing pages.
In particular for the English Wikipedia another disadvantage of categories is that they are often not in mirror sites; sometimes they are, but only the editable parts.
